What is an AI agent?

8 min read Written for beginners Last reviewed October 2026

An AI agent is software that uses an AI model to work toward a goal for you, taking several steps on its own instead of answering one question at a time.

The short version

A normal chatbot waits for you to type something, answers, and stops. An agent is given a goal, such as “check these three websites each morning and send me a short summary”, and then works through the steps needed to get there. It can read information, decide what to do next, use other tools, and report back.

What makes something an “agent”

People use the word loosely, but most agents have these four parts:

  1. A goal. A clear instruction about what you want done.
  2. A brain. An AI model that reads instructions and decides what to do.
  3. Tools. Things it is allowed to use, like a web search, your calendar, a spreadsheet, or email.
  4. A loop. It tries a step, looks at the result, and decides the next step until it is done or it gets stuck.

Chatbot, automation, agent: what is the difference?

What it doesExample
ChatbotAnswers when you ask. You steer every step. You ask for a draft email and copy it yourself.
AutomationFollows fixed rules you set up. Same steps every time.“When a form is filled in, add a row to a spreadsheet.”
AgentChooses its own steps toward a goal, within limits you set.“Read my new messages and draft replies for the ones that need an answer.”

In practice the lines blur. Many useful setups are an automation with one AI step inside it. That is a fine place to start.

What agents are good at

  • Repetitive, low-risk chores with clear instructions.
  • Gathering and summarizing information from many places.
  • Drafting first versions that a person then reviews.
  • Sorting and labeling things, like messages or documents.

What they are not good at (yet)

  • Anything where a mistake is costly and no one checks the result, such as sending money or deleting files.
  • Vague goals. “Grow my business” is not a task an agent can do for you.
  • Facts without a source. AI models can state wrong things confidently. Always check anything important.

A good rule for beginners

Let the agent prepare and let a human approve. For example, let it draft an email, but you press send. As you build trust in a particular setup, you can decide how much freedom to give it. Our safety and privacy checklist covers this in more detail.
